Our virtual Summer Book Club is back!
CDHY invites all parents, paras, teachers, interpreters, administrators, TODs, SLPs, and anyone else who engages with Deaf or hard of Hearing students in K-12 settings.
When? Tuesdays, 3pm-5pm (PST) July 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th and August 6th.
This summer, we will be reading The Butterfly Change, a memoir by Rachel Zemach.
In this tender, funny, and surprising book, you’ll meet a Deaf teacher and her students in a public California classroom as they struggle with staff, aides, and an administration that sabotages their education at every turn. You’ll find a principal who removes textbooks, a vindictive speech therapist, and an educational system that is utterly ignorant of the needs of Deaf children.
You’ll also meet a language-obsessed boy who will capture your heart, and the political, fiercely intelligent Deaf community members who rally after his life takes a shocking turn. Learn from these true stories of Deaf children — and their quirky, fallible teacher — about why our Deaf and hard of hearing students around the country are being unnecessarily set up for failure.
